When mounting roman shades they can either be inside or outside mounted. The type of window will usually determine which way would be the best. If you don't have enough room to mount inside but you still want the look of an inside mount shade then you can mount them directly on the molding as I did in these two examples.
If you want a structured shade the rings are spaced horizontally about every 10" apart as in the above shades.
For a "relaxed" shade the rings are only placed at the outside edges and that gives you the scoop at the bottom like the romans I made for this dining room. You also permanently tie up the bottom 3 rings so there is fullness when the shade is down.

Great information, particularly for those of us that know very little about anything requiring needle and thread. Sue
those look great! I am impressed. I need to make one for my kitchen window. Have you already posted a tutorial on how to make them?
I've had to mount them both ways in my house. I think I prefer the inside mount, but as you say, sometimes because of the type of window you can't.
I had to mount mine on the outside but I still love the way they look. I love the clean crisp look of roman shades. You are so talented in that you can make these yourself and I love that fabric. Is it Amy Butler? They look awesome.

I'm not sure if it's Amy Butler. It came from Printer's Alley. I have not done a tutorial yet but I will.
Hi Tammy,
My daughter Noelle, emailed you tonight about making some roman shades for her. She has spent hours looking at fabric online. It's addicting.
LeAnn
Ironically I JUST got Roman shades for an outside mount so this post is VERY helpful. Thank you!
It would be awesome to see you at the Farmers Market! I don't know my exact location yet but I'm "All Through the House"

I love Roman shades. I'd love to have some made for my kitchen windows. There are some things that I don't have the talent to attempt on my own and Roman shades don't look like an easy DIY project.
