I is for Ikat

The ABC’s of window treatments

Ikat is a type of fabric that uses the Far East method of warp printing on textiles and is very popular on upholstery, draperies and pillows.

I’ve used this Ikat fabric by Robert Allen, pattern Kathandi, color Cinnabar.  Another one of those projects that I wish I had taken pictures of but I didn’t.

Highland Court has beautiful Ikats as part of their Marakesh Collection.  I wish I had a place to use this one.

A pink Carlton V Ikat is used on the drapery panels, chair and pillows, what a sweet room !

Another option is to use the Ikat on the walls and make coordinating window treatments and bedding in solid fabrics.

Or you could keep everything neutral and use a punch of Ikat on the rug, like this one from CB2.

My friend Sally at Divine Distractions just did a post on Ikats and she has some lovely examples if you would like to see more.

Are you a fan of Ikat ?

Thanks for the shout out, Tammy! You've gotten some great examples of Ikat here! Between the two of us, I think we've found some of the best!

I am amazed at how I have grown to love Ikats! Years ago I thought they were awful...but now, oh yes, love them!
I think they're so versatile and can combine so many colors in one design. They are usually muted, and with the white or cream worked into the design, the look is wonderful.
I also like that they originate in other parts of the world. I was in India many years ago and noticed, in particular, that many of the hotels used Ikats all over. Printed on a soft linen they are perfect for hot weather too.
Thanks also for the link to Divine Distractions!

I am! But just in small doses.

I do love Ikat, especially in smaller doses. I love the drapery panels, but don't think I'd paper my walls in the pattern. It seems too busy.

I really love it on the rug...not the walls so much. That is a bit too busy for me!

I love ikat's. I recently used the one from highland court for a job here in TN. It was gorgeous finished out in a pillow. Loved it!
