Thrift to Treasure

My crafty project this week is two wood plaques that I covered with scrapbook paper. I found two decorative wood pieces at Goodwill and I thought about turning them into sconces.

My first step was to paint the edges a dark brown then I applied Mod Podge to the wood and to the back of the scrapbook paper. Then I put the paper on top and smoothed it out really well. I did have to use 2 pieces each because one wasn't wide enough so I just butted them together in the center. After it dried, I took a razor knife and cut out the design. That was pretty tedious and took a little while.

Once it was all cut out then I applied 3 coats of Mod Podge to the top, letting each coat dry. Then I attached sawtooth hangers to the back and hung them on the wall. Each plaque cost $ 2.99 and used $ 1.20 of scrap paper.

I still think I want to turn them into sconces by attaching a candle to each one. I just need to find what I'm picturing in my mind.

I will be posting this at Between Naps On the Porch for Metamorphosis Monday with a lot of other great projects.

Hi, Tammy, I think these do look like candle sconces, and I can see where you're going. I know you are going to enjoy having these!

I wouldn't have thought to do it, or maybe had the patience to cut it all out! What a great way to change the look.

Really pretty. I'm glad you showed the up-close view so we could see the detail. It's always so rewarding to make something yourself.
